How to Fix White Spots on Teeth

Dr. Isabela Aguirre in Noblesville, Indiana - Hamilton Town Dentistry

What Causes White Spots on Teeth?

Have you ever noticed small white spots on your teeth that just won't go away, no matter how much you brush or whiten your teeth? These white spots can be caused by a variety of factors, including enamel demineralization (from plaque buildup,) excess fluoride, and even previous orthodontic treatment. Depending on how noticeable they are, they can make you hesitant to smile or show your teeth in public.

If you're struggling with white spots on your teeth, you're not alone. But whitening alone won’t erase these bright discolorations in your enamel. Fortunately, micro-abrasion is a minimally invasive solution that can help remove these spots and restore the natural beauty of your smile.

What is Micro-Abrasion?

Enamel micro-abrasion is a dental procedure that uses a combination of light abrasive material and gentle etching solution to safely remove the outer layer of your tooth enamel, where the white spots are located. This process is gentle and minimally invasive and typically doesn't require any anesthesia.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Micro-abrasion treatments usually take about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. First, we'll clean your teeth to remove any surface stains or buildup. Then, we'll apply a gentle abrasive material to the affected areas of your enamel. Next, we'll rinse your teeth and apply an etching solution to help remove the remaining white spots. Finally, we'll polish your teeth to give them a smooth, shiny finish.

Is Micro-Abrasion Safe?
One of the benefits of micro-abrasion is that it is a minimally invasive procedure. Unlike more aggressive treatments that alter your tooth structure, micro-abrasion doesn't require any removal of healthy enamel. This means you can keep your natural teeth intact while still achieving a beautiful smile.
