What Dental Plaque truly is? Well, when a high sticky, colorless or pale yellow deposit of film starts to develop persistently on your teeth, it is termed as Dental plaque.
When saliva, food, and fluids come in contact with each other, it creates plaque. It is made of bacteria – producing between your teeth and along the gum line. This, in fact, can ruin your tooth enamel and gums.
Scientists term plaque a “biofilm” as it is a group of living microbes cloaked by a sticky polymer layer. The gluey coating enables the microbes to stick to surfaces inside your mouth so that they can advance into strong microcolonies. Plaque is most visible when you don’t brush or floss your teeth properly.
- Bacteria and other microbes get into your mouth whenever you eat, drink, or even breathe.
- When you consume carbohydrates or sugary foods and drinks, for example, milk, juice, soft drinks, and fruit, bacteria feed on the sugars. This results in forming acids during the method. Those acids, later on, cause problems such as cavities, gingivitis, and may result in tooth decay.

- Brush your teeth twice a day for a minimum of 2-3 minutes.
- Use a soft, rounded-tip bristled toothbrush. Few dentists recommend using electric toothbrushes. They are found to be more efficient to eliminate plaque.
- Opt for toothpaste that contains baking soda or Fluoride.
- Carefully clean the gaps usually where the gums and teeth meet.
- Floss once daily.
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash of course with a doctor’s recommendation. This minimizes bacterial growth that results in plaque or other gum disorders.
- Make regular visits to your dentist for a check-up and Teeth Cleaning.
- Follow a proper balanced diet and limit the number of between-meal snacks. Vegetables, like celery, can remove food particles. Celery also enables saliva to neutralize plaque-causing acids.
